Maria Ines Villasmil

Hello everyone. My name is Maria Ines Villasmil. i'm doing this video request of my friend Christina she asked me to kind of share with you my personal artist

relation between liking and choreography. i hope this video work I'm doing the video on my own and I hopefully make my self clear and contribute to her research. She sent me feel question and I want to try to go to all those questions and I help this really work so the question needs them.

Who i am ?

As I say before my name is Maria Ines Villasmil, and i being in contact with Cristina to Arte Total and to get a wrap, i did already 2 artist residence in Braga and that's how we met actually, so i am from Venezuela and I came to Holland I thinkI have 19 Years old in jun 20. Basically after that  I have running back and forward between America Canada South American doing all kind of research around of Europe, so basically I teach in day after school of art with my main place of work and besides that I do a lot of independent work as a choreographer, as a teacher researcher and as writer things on part of the editor of  dance magazine base in Spain so that's basically me and my choreographer and I basically going to talk about my life experience in Braga we're doing my time doing RPC residence inn generation inside of the project colic gala I hope, i pronounce it well so basically I'm going to refer the questions of Christina related to this specific project and maybe i will make a few reference to a project I did before in the museum of Biscainhos so the first question she asked me how I did myself got involved with the city Braga, i just say i was here before working in another project in the museum and doing a short residente period with several danceres and in the end we made a final presentation this time I work basically inside of the museum inside of all structure we didn't went out although we were dancing on the garden doing film scene of the whole piece over again but that this particular process i did last summer I mean the summer of 2013 he was more around the relation between the city of Braga and how we do a connection with the it's based around the city and how we get these memories and sensations we got from all those places back into the building of a generation where the final presentation of the piece was going to happen. So these were cited specific projects that its start in the city so we went around of all city of Braga basic in an area that allow us to move you know quickly because we couldn't get so far from each other with we're having we use time work and having the dances going to all these places that they have to choose on their own and make a small solar performance on those choosen areas we moved back to building of generation where the final presentation of the Peace. I call it the nine photographic installation because in the whole system was made as an installation where each audience had the opportunity to have an individual performance so was one relation. It was a kind of private experience that what the way we got involved with the city this time and then i will going to explain later how was the whole process and methods use it to go to the city work their research they are find out information documented information and come back bring it back to the actual building were there the whole performance was done considering the main difference between the two hours of working i mean the the core of the center Braga is very Barack very old and when we came back to generation Is this made around that old building but it's very come much closer to kind of modern architecture and very clean and very simple absolutely and almost minimalistic space what surprised me most, well what was facinated me is how much we connect the old faced of the city of Braga and we were able to bring it back into a very modern architecture so as I said before I asked to each of the dancers to go out of the city and found as part where they feel attracted to for any reason some of them explain they were attracted to this place because they go every day in front of it and they were not really paying so much attention or maybe they were paying attention but they never realized i want to do a performance here so each of them found a place and I asked them to document the place this means i asked them to make pictures i asked them to make drawing if it was necessary. I want them to also realize where my out it was supposed to be watching my performance so they have to also think about if I perform in this corner from where will be the best point of view for my audience to be seated. The other thing I ask them was to regístrate any kind of physical experience sound whatever these specific place chosen by them kind of call to them what what kind of sensation what kind of physicality what kind of color what kind of environment what kind of noise whatever and for that i am going to just document this process taking notes making draws making pictures but I did not ask them to physicalize any experiences so the first encounter with the place, is with Documentation, writing observing making pictures and just being there seeting observing, the idea is to do that is to kind of ask them and forth and I mean in a good way of course to see how they can open up their senses to all the information around these specific space but not just having the body image on that so that's what the first approach document experience and document all their possibilities be it taste these specific corner of the city was offering and for doing that they just have to write nothing else. The third question is how do you expand expect experience to the body to dance then I think that writing contribute to reveal this creative process because in the beginning I just often to do a straight kind of a brainstorm by the on it was a very individual process they were just there observing watching experiencing taking pictures and writing I asked them to write any kind of communications coming out of a space that's what the first encounter the second time I ask them to go back and release it this space of course they're having already a certain information but also they have been documented in this process so i asked them to go back to this place and then be more physical involved with the place then at that time at that specific moment thing was the second day of our residents i asked them to then go further in in physical material find physical material here that somehow it's coming from the experience of these specific corner or the door of charge or the corridor a narrow corridor from the center of the city or I don't know there was so many places well the first thing was ready to trade the second part of the process was just going there and having this document available just to find a physical material into their bodies are somehow connected with all these information so the third process of this i think the reason was to go back and we make up our core we use a map of the city each of the dances explains the reasons ok this was the place I choose and this was my reason to choosing that and i just made together with them a park or so we asked them to go and live early somehow every time the audience was arriving we found our performance already in the spot so we were having a map of the city and we were just revisiting the city having these artistic view for these artistic choices made by each of our dancers so this was the first time we were there atending a performance on the urine space, Cristina ask me  what books were very importante in general for me as a dancer but i want to mention that for these specific projects this side of specific projects based on the body and in memory of the city i was inspired by witches enix which is a sociolaty story which is a social facilities and very good facilities and he has a beautiful of book, in spanish they call it “juntos” I think has to be  together. This thing will be gente politics of cooperation we just send it what kind of X while i was inspired in this in this text advantage because somehow their research just adjusting in galleries time and generations try to find it intersection of corporation or coexistence of three main element with his protector the public state the choreography and the body we basically begin with these three elements and we can of the love of methods that allow us to connect these three elements and basically the interest  of Richard Sennett was how we can incubate ideas to be exploring in the United States you one space to let later we shift into the performance environment so basically this is what we do i often to go out into the urine space kind of catch and document the experience and after I won them to shift his experience and translators appears to a specific performance space so basically my experience want to see how each of the performers inhabits the places they choose and they love a certain performativity a certain material that belong to these specific a place and later bring it back to the similar wounds we we found in to generation that's why the final form of the performance was nine choreographic installations because it was a kind of a an ongoing process of each member of the audience experience a very one-by-one performance so the out is we're going to get into a room have a performance to themselves and leave the room and get to another experience but he was a very individual and a very intimate performance that actually start from the public space and was transforming into a very private and very one by one space so  the main connection between the two with two spaces where they carry on of them of the memory and I think these memories were basically regístrate documenting writing and also drawing the traces and this method kind of allow us to recreate the experience into the space of generation of course there is another reason why  i think it is very important in my personal work the process of writing i use a lot of the time not only time but another in other experience like I'm their screen as museum i asked my dancers the collaborators to write and release the automatic like this is a way to also create a certain mental estate or kind of God to a process of writing without thinking and somehow by doing this certain ideas to push the life and emerge by itself and you in the last experience that the field before this one in the museum of Biscainhos, I asked the dancers to write and basically we were again play with a sense of memory and I just tried them i just ask them to write about all the memories they thought these beatifull houses biscainhos have trying to imagine how is to living there liking how I to meet there I'm and they came with a serious writing work that later on we're used in the in the final music score of the piece so that's for instance how writing also what supporting  an artistic process a crappy process but in the very very end was also used to the final design the sound and unsound score musical sign for the peace so the final question christina is how is writing a serving the the act of choreographing or making work for me as a teacher at the researcher choreograph I think the writing is always a tool that allow us to reflect to document the process you need traded to look at back and see how we start where we were talking and how we move forward so besides being a tool to in ance creativity I also sing the writing is a tool that allows to document process and unfollow the trades and I think we are allows to be back and see from where we come from and how this final piece of final process was shaving a specific way so I think writing having the possibilities of writing all the time allows to document the process but also we have this constant and possibility of shape and also point back i got these Western moment when we start to kind of find out where the piece was about as a writer I think myself since I have to also right in and as a part of editors and magazines i have the beautiful image from my professor from my sociolagy when I Western sociolagy he always as this funny way of ask you a question and maybe sometimes after few minutes when you start to answer the question there were oral examine that were not writing he immediately will it stop you or he will allow you to keep talking so it was really disappointing when you start just explaining your ideas and after maybe two or three minutes he will ask you okay fine you can leave and in the end you get the a very high great so we were always wondering so I ask to my professor to sleep with what the reason I hardly say anything and you already stopped me and then I go to very high great and I'm you say to me a beautiful word I think I carry on after more than20 years he said to me well  maria you know I need to have a very clear idea that you know what is the choreography of whatever you are saying in order to know that you have a very clear keroppi I have to know right away that you have a very specific points that have to be addressed it in the question I asking you so in few minute I can see that you have very clear the point of the choreography so I don't need to see the development of the choreography but I can see that you have this structure and you had the choreography of the answer and you have the choreography of the text you are going to write that so this is why I just stopped you because I know the rest is going to come but if I feel listening to you and I don't see this clarity in the choreography it's probably you will stay here talking maybe 5 10 15 minutes and i will be feel trying to find choreography and at the moment I will stop there may probably you were you going to get very low great i think i'll do nowadays when I write I still have in this idea of the choreography of my texts when I document when i write an article or when I just basically have to reflect about process I always happy idea of the choreography of attacks what need to what needs to be said first and what are all the ideas to kind of support these writing so for me series and natural relation betweenwriting and choreography and this is something that support my process until today so this is almost almost 23 minutes and I hope I make myself clear i hope that this was the useful and there is any question just call me back.

Thank you very much have a great day. Bye.
